Stages of Melanoma

Staging is a process to determine the extent to which cancer may have spread. Since melanoma has a higher risk of spreading, staging is done to learn how dense or thick the growth or tumor is and how deeply it has affected the skin. Staging is also based on the level of ulceration and whether melanoma cells have spread to nearby lymph nodes or other parts of the body. Nearby lymph nodes may be removed to check for cancer cells.
