Dr. Mayzik
The risks and complications of a skin biopsy may vary depending on the location of the suspicious area of skin and the type of biopsy procedure performed. Dr. Alvarado, can you tell us more?

Dr. Alvarado
Certainly, Dr. Mayzik. The risks and potential complications of a skin biopsy can include, but are not limited to:

  • Scarring
  • Bleeding
  • Discoloration
  • Adverse reactions to anesthesia
  • Infection
  • Pain, and
  • Numbness at the biopsy site

The biopsy usually takes place at a provider’s office or as an outpatient procedure at the clinic or hospital. Although complications after the procedure are uncommon, it’s important to contact a provider immediately if complications do occur.
