Staging is a process to determine the extent of cancer. Generally, there are three ways that cancer spreads, or metastasizes, throughout the body, including through tissue, the lymph system, or the bloodstream.

Because basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is a non-melanoma skin cancer, it rarely spreads. BCC is seldom staged unless the cancer is large, in which case the original biopsy is usually all that is needed to stage basal cell carcinoma.
